Obituary

William H. Dryer, Jr., a resident of Melrose and formerly a longtime resident of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. He was 78.

Born in Boston on August 23, 1947, Bill was one of four children of the late William H. Dryer and Nellie M. (Santagata) Dryer. Raised in Quincy, he graduated from Quincy High School and proudly served in the United States Army Reserves.

Following high school, Bill began a 42-year career with New England Telephone Company, later Verizon. A dedicated member of IBEW Local 2222, he served as a union officer and took great pride in his work and in representing his fellow employees. Upon retirement, Bill embraced the opportunity to spend more time with the people who meant the most to him.

While he enjoyed golf and the friendships formed over rounds with longtime friends, nothing compared to the joy he found in being a grandfather. His three grandsons were the center of his world. Whether at the hockey rink, baseball diamond, or lacrosse field, Bill was their biggest fan and most devoted supporter. He rarely missed a game and gladly traveled throughout New England to cheer them on. The pride he felt in their accomplishments and the time he spent on the sideline brought him endless joy.

Bill was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh. He always had a one-liner ready and enjoyed bringing smiles to those around him. Beneath that humor was a deeply devoted family man whose greatest satisfaction came from watching the youngest generation grow and succeed.

Bill will be remembered for his loyalty, his laughter, and most of all, for the unconditional love he shared with his family. The memories he created with his grandsons will remain a lasting source of comfort and pride for those who knew and loved him.

Bill was the beloved father of Michael W. Dryer and his wife Cortney of Melrose. Proud grandfather of Cameron, Nolan and Brendan Dryer. Dear brother of Kathy Tuffy and her husband Jim of Braintree, Mary Johnson of Avon, and Nancy Dryer of Boston. Former husband of Janet A. Keefe of FL. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in Bill's memory during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, June 24 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, followed by his Funeral Service at 1pm.
