Obituary

Walter A. Johnson, 84, of Melrose, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington.

Born in Melrose on September 23, 1941 to Arne E. and Alice M. (Shaw) Johnson, Walter graduated from Melrose High School before furthering his education with an Associate's degree from Wentworth College. His work ethic and dedication led him to a fulfilling career as an Elevator Mechanic for IUEC Local 4. Walter often remarked that he never worked a day in his life, as he loved his job and cherished the lifelong friendships he formed with his colleagues.

In 1986, Walter married the love of his life, Laura Shustowsky, and together they built a warm and loving home in Melrose where they raised their family. Walter’s generosity and affection for his family were evident to all and he continually demonstrated what it meant to be a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His spirit shone brightly during cherished moments spent at their home on Lake Winnipesaukee where boating, jet skiing, and creating memories with family brought him immense joy.

Walter’s interests reflected his vibrant personality. He was passionate about classic cars, hot rods, and motorcycles. He was an exceptional poker player and regularly gathered with friends to enjoy the thrill of the game. Walter shared a special love of all animals, especially with his beloved Dobermans. He was dedicated to the practice of martial arts and in his younger years owned and operated a karate school in Boston, later embracing the tranquility of Tai Chi as he matured. Walter will be deeply missed but never forgotten, living on in the hearts of those he touched with his generous spirit and loving nature.

Walter was the beloved husband of Laura A. Johnson with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. Devoted father of Walter A. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Heidi Arrowsmith of Stoneham, Eric E. Johnson and his wife Elzi Johnson of Melrose, Donna M. Johnson and her husband Richard Popp of Melrose, Denise M. Johnson of Melrose, and the late Brenda A. Johnson. Proud grandfather of Catelyn A. Johnson and her husband David John, Taylor A. Crane and her husband Breandan Crane, Amanda A. Johnson and her partner Dario Sousa, Nicholas W. Johnson, Brandon R. Tebo, and Brittany M. Nowell. Also survived by 5 great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Ziggy.

Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of Walter’s life at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose, on Monday, March 2nd, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 3rd, for his funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Walter may be made to Doberman Rescue Unlimited, 52 Tenney Road, Sandown, NH 03873 (www.dru.org).
