Thomas E. Smith Sr., 82, of Methuen, formerly of Stoneham, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at his home.

Born on August 23, 1943, in Boston, Tom was one of four children of the late Hugh P. and Helena (née McFarland) Smith, Sr. Tom grew up in South Portland and Beverly, where he forged lifelong friendships and cherished memories.

A graduate of Beverly High School, Tom played on the state championship football team during the 1960-1961 season and also made his mark as a baseball player. Tom worked his way through Boston State University, and eventually earned his Master's in Liberal Studies from Boston University, affirming his commitment to education and excellence.

Tom began his professional career at John Hancock as a pioneer in the field of computer sciences, eventually moving on to companies such as W.R. Grace, Gerber, and
Unitil, ultimately retiring as a Vice President of Information Systems. With a quiet demeanor and a patient spirit, he commanded respect whenever he spoke, leaving a lasting impression.

A treasured family man, he was dearly loved by his wife, Nancy and took immense pride in being a devoted father and grandfather. For forty years, Tom and Nancy explored the world together, creating a legacy of memories that showcased their adventurous spirit. An avid golfer and poker enthusiast, he often enjoyed the thrill of a friendly game, while his passion for statistics found him diligently keeping baseball stats long before it became mainstream. Tom was a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics.

Additionally, Tom was a civil war buff, a lover of reading and writing, having published "The Annotation of Moby Dick" and also took great pleasure in watching westerns and matching wits in a game of chess.

Tom was a guiding light, a beacon of kindness, and a source of wisdom for all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

Tom was the beloved husband of Nancy C. (Cawthorne) Smith with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Devoted father of Thomas E. (Kimberly) Smith of Montgomery, VT, Kevin R. (Dennise) Smith of
