Stephen Patrick Galvin, a devoted Melrose Police Officer, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side. He was 51.
Born in Medford on December 22, 1973, Steve was one of three children of the late Michael T. Galvin Sr. and Paulette (Keaveny) Galvin. Raised in Melrose, he was a proud graduate of Melrose High School, Class of 1993. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably as a Special Police Officer and Equipment Manager in Adak, Alaska. His time in the military helped shape his lifelong commitment to public service.
At age 25, Steve returned home and entered the First MPOC Police Academy at Camp Curtis in Reading, graduating on July 18, 1998. That same year, he joined the Melrose Police Department-a force he would loyally serve for the next 27 years.
Steve wore the badge with deep pride and quiet humility. As a Patrolman, he was known for his unwavering professionalism, kind heart, and steady presence. He mentored numerous new officers as a Field Training Officer and was instrumental in founding and leading the Melrose Police Honor Guard, which he served with quiet reverence and dedication. Over the years, he held several roles, including that of Department Prosecutor, but perhaps the greatest honor came when he was awarded Badge #1 as the longest-serving active Patrolman- a position he earned through decades of honest, hard work. To his fellow officers, Steve wasn't just a colleague-he was one of the good ones, and his absence leaves a deep void.
Outside of his uniform, Steve's heart belonged to his family. He was a devoted husband to Erin and a loving, playful father to his two sons, Stephen Jr. and Liam. Whether racing go-karts, playing mini golf, or spending a day at the arcade, Steve delighted in making memories with his boys. He never said no to time with them and was happiest simply being present-as a dad, a friend, and a role model.
Summer vacations on Cape Cod, cheering on Boston sports teams, and laughing with loved ones were just some of Steve's favorite pastimes. Deeply connected to his Irish heritage, he had a love for storytelling and always knew how to find joy in the everyday. With an inquisitive mind and a wealth of knowledge, he was often the one others turned to for advice, facts, or just a good laugh.
Stephen Galvin's legacy is one of loyalty, humility, service, and love. The City of Melrose was fortunate to have him walking its streets, watching over its residents, and representing the very best of its values. His loss is deeply felt by the entire community, the brotherhood of the Melrose Police Department, and most of all, his cherished family.
May he rest in well-earned peace, remembered always for the strength of his character, the warmth of his heart, and the quiet way he made the Melrose community better.
Stephen was the beloved husband of Erin L. (Twomey) Galvin with whom he shared 21 years of marriage. Devoted father of Stephen P. Galvin, Jr. and Liam Galvin both of Lynn. Cherished son of the late Paulette and Michael T. Galvin, and son-in-law of Karen Twomey and the late Lt. Col. Jack Twomey. Caring brother of Michael T. Galvin Jr. and his wife Emily of Franklin, NH, Danielle Leary and her husband Steven of W. Boylston, and brother-in-law of Sean Twomey and his wife Aleksandra of Portsmouth, RI. Also survived by several loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor of Stephen's life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St, Melrose on Tuesday, July 22 from 4-8pm, and again on Wednesday, July 23 at 9am before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose for his Funeral Mass at 10am. Interment in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations to support Steve's family may be made to the Galvin Family Education Fund, c/o Eastern Bank, 441 Main Street, Melrose, MA 02176.
