Salvatore A. LoPilato, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Sunday, February 1, 2026. He was 97.
Salvatore was born in Boston on May 3, 1928, one of four children of the late Salvatore LoPilato and Nellie (Pasqualeti) LoPilato. He was raised in East Boston, where his Italian heritage, close-knit family life, and strong work ethic shaped the man he would become. A proud graduate of East Boston High School, Sal excelled in athletics, particularly hockey, baseball, and golf. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably for two years.
Driven and ambitious, Sal worked by day and attended night school, ultimately earning an engineering degree from Northeastern University. His determination and intellect led to a distinguished career with Avco/Textron, where he worked for more than 30 years as a highly respected engineer. Sal contributed to significant aerospace projects, including the Apollo spacecraft and the Space Shuttle program—achievements that reflected both his skill and dedication. After retiring early at the age of 59, he continued to share his expertise as a consultant in the aerospace and defense industries.
Social, charming, and full of personality, Sal met his beloved wife, Rosalie Zuzolo, at a dance hall in Revere. Together, they settled in Melrose, where they raised their three children and built a life centered on family. Introduced to horse racing at a young age by his mother during visits to Suffolk Downs, Sal maintained a lifelong appreciation for the sport and its traditions.
In retirement, Sal embraced his favorite pursuits. Golf became a central joy, and he was a familiar and well-liked presence at Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose, where he was a founding member of the Inner Club, competed in tournaments, and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow golfers. He also relished trips to the racetrack, an occasional casino visit, and evenings filled with music, especially the timeless songs of Frank Sinatra. A natural dancer, Sal never lost his love for the dance floor. He and Rosalie enjoyed traveling, scenic day trips throughout New England, and above all, time spent with family—particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Strong-willed, hardworking, and self-made, Sal took pride in a life built through perseverance, integrity, and joy. He was quick with a joke, generous with his wisdom, and deeply respected by those around him. A man of warmth, character, and accomplishment, Salvatore LoPilato will be deeply missed by his family and friends and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
Sal was the beloved husband of Rosalie C. (Zuzolo) LoPilato, with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Stephen LoPilato and his wife Shari of North Andover, Frank LoPilato and his life partner Awilda Ramos of Lynnfield, and Lynne Pistorino and her husband Mark of Wakefield. He is also survived by his devoted and loving caretaker, Dee Croshaw of Wakefield. Sal was the dear brother of the late Frank LoPilato, Raymond LoPilato, and Antoinette Interbartolo.
He was the cherished grandfather of Tyler LoPilato and his wife Maria Elena of Tampa, Florida; Jenna LoPilato and her partner Keola Heatherly of Las Vegas; Monet and Slate LoPilato of Lynnfield; Morgan Andrews and her husband David of North Andover; and Brooke Pistorino and her boyfriend Matthew Smith of Billerica. He was the proud great-grandfather of Kamila Rose and Kainoa Rain Heatherly. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor of Sal’s life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, Feb. 6 from 3-7pm, and for his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 758 Salem St., Lynnfield on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10am. (Please meet directly at Church). Gifts in his memory may be made to Bread of Life, 54 Eastern Ave., Malden MA 02148.
