Salmon W.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Salmon W. Putnam V (Sammy), age 74, on Friday, May 1, 2026. Sammy, formerly of Winchester, MA and Popponesset, MA, passed away while surrounded by his loving family at his Melrose home. Sammy was born to Salmon W. Putnam IV and Janet Ross Putnam in Fitchburg, MA.
Sammy loved playing hockey and skating on the ponds in Winchester until dark. His love of hockey continued while playing at the Vermont Academy, Winchester High School and Lowell Tech.
Sammy was a proud retiree who worked for Verizon Communications for 29 years. During this time, he was a member of both IBEW Local 2222 and Local 2321, working Special Services and as an Outside Plant Technician.
As a dedicated member of the Winchester Elks Club for 54 years, Sam built lasting friendships and contributed to a community that meant so much to him. He played many years of golf with his friends, enjoying several out of state golf outings and participating in tournaments. Sammy was a passionate sports fan-a true Boston enthusiast-but nothing brought him greater pride or happiness than spending time with the family and being "Grampy" to 4 grandchildren. Whether visiting, on the sidelines, or in the stands at sports or attending a dance recital or competition, he was their biggest supporter, cheering them on with unmatched enthusiasm in all their endeavors.
Sam found joy in the simple and meaningful moments in life whether at home or at the Cape. When he retired several years ago, he was a token figure and was seen walking around the neighborhood with "Ogie", the beloved family bulldog. He believed in keeping a sharp mind and easily tackled the daily crossword puzzle, the Cryptoquote and Sudoku. He was also a voracious reader with John Grisham being his most favorite author.
An avid fisherman, he treasured time spent with friends on the water, rod in hand, waiting (sometimes impatiently) for the "big" catch. Sam loved being a resident of Melrose. He gave his heart, his energy, and his time helping family, friends, and neighbors in any way possible.
Sammy is survived by siblings Martha Guthrie of Denver, CO, Cynthia "Harper" Putnam of Oakland, CA, Debbie Putnam of Malden, MA, and pre-deceased by David Putnam. In addition, he was an uncle to Sara Guthrie (Danny), Doug Guthrie (Di), Matt Guthrie (Caitlin) and several great-nieces and a great-nephew, all of Colorado. He leaves the love of his life, Missy Antolini, Melrose, MA, Luke Antolini (Lauren), North Reading, MA, (Ben and Sadie), Mike Antolini (Tricia), Bethesda, MD, Matt Antolini (Jen), Chicago, IL, (Zoe and Jack).
Sam will be forever loved and deeply missed. His heart will live on in all of us.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life and a tribute to honor our wonderful Sammy on Monday, June 1 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Fairways at Woburn Country Club, 5 Country Club Road, Woburn, MA 01810.
