Robert H. Whittier, longtime Melrose resident and current longest service Active-Duty Massachusetts State Trooper, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022 with his family by his side.He was 71.

Born on July 25, 1950, Bob was one of three children of the late Robert M. and Margaret L. (Beers) Whittier.Bob graduated from the University of Maine in 1973, and then Anna Maria College receiving his master's in criminal justice.

Bob joined the Massachusetts State Police in 1973 and served for 47 years.He Recently received Badge #1 marking him as the sworn Department member with the longest active tenure.Bob's long and distinguished career led him to numerous places around the state, and in 1992 he was assigned to the Motorcycle Unit.At the time of his passing, he was a member of the 59th RTT.

Bob excelled at route and contingency planning, and his expertise was sought after during arrivals of Dignitaries, Heads of State, and large events in the city.He was entirely devoted to the badge, and his fellow officer's.

Outside of his work, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and numerous close friends, watching a movie from his substantial collection, reading the newspaper, or reading about and discussing one of his favorite topics, history.

Bob's love of his family and friends, love of his life's work and fellow citizens, will be remembered fondly by all of those who knew and loved him.
Robert is survived by his brother S. Gage (the late Dotty) Whittier of Lincolnville, ME, and the late Laurel J. Whittier.He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; Samuel and Charlotte Beckman, Addison and Audrey Holland, Eric and Paige Beckman, and John and Laurel Holland, and cousins Jay (Terry Sands) Whittier, and Jill and Janice Whittier.

Relatives & friends are invited to visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 4-7pm and his Funeral Service at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Rd., Lexington,on Wednesday celebrated at 11am.Masks are required.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Mass General Cancer Center, Mass General Development Office, 125 Nashua St., Suite 540, Boston, MA. 02114, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
