Robert F. Chagnot, a recent resident of Melrose and a former resident of Boston for 11 years, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the age of 88.
Born on January 4, 1936, in Torrington, CT, Robert, affectionately known as "Bob," was the only child of Kathryn Taylor Chagnot and Harry Chagnot. He spent his childhood in Torrington before attending Georgetown University and Trinity College in Connecticut. Bob earned a master's degree in psychology and dedicated his career to serving as a school social worker, profoundly impacting countless adolescents. He received numerous heartfelt thank-you letters from the children he helped, many expressing a desire for him to be their father.
In 1966, Bob married Anne Constable, the love of his life, in Torrington, Connecticut, on November 12. They built a home in Torrington and raised their daughter, Kathryn, there until she moved to Boston after college. Bob had a passion for travel, sharing many adventures with his wife and daughter. His dream of living in a bustling city came true in 2013 when he and Anne moved to an apartment in Boston, where they enjoyed 11 wonderful years of retirement and frequent visits with their daughter.
Bob was an avid reader and a lover of movies, British comedies, and detective series. He adored his grand-dogs and grand-cats: Maisie, Lola, Nigel, Clifford, Lucky, Roxie, and the newest puppy, Stella.
In his leisure time, Bob and Anne enjoyed walks in the Boston Garden, people-watching from a bench overlooking the pond. He had a deep appreciation for beautiful scenery, great food, culture, and art. Bob was a passionate sports fan, particularly of playoff games and football, and cherished attending his first Red Sox game with his daughter. He was a devoted New England Patriots fan.
Bob was an excellent photographer, capturing hundreds of family moments and scenes from their travels. Some of his favorite places included Boston, MA, Waitsfield and Stowe, VT, Newport, RI, Ogunquit, ME, London, Paris, and most of all, Nantucket, MA. He loved the ocean, spending much time at Highland Lake in CT during his youth, and enjoyed boating and swimming. He treasured beach days at Rocky Neck in New London, CT, with his daughter.
Bob enjoyed good music and often listened to his favorite songs with his wife, using his Alexa. He was technologically savvy, spending countless hours on his iPad and Kindle, reading and playing games. He stayed informed on the latest tech trends and read the Wall Street Journal religiously. Bob was also passionate about politics and enjoyed discussing a wide range of topics.
He was a self-taught expert in health and wellness, holistic medicine, and vitamins, always seeking ways to enhance longevity and health. Bob was known for his intelligence, kindness, and storytelling. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Anne, and his dearly loved daughter, Kathy. He will be remembered for his strength, kindness, wit, and intelligence.
Bob was the beloved husband of Anne (Constable) Chagnot with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Devoted father of Kathryn Chagnot and her husband Bruce K. Hounsell.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in honor of Bob at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, MA., on Saturday, July 6 for his Funeral Service celebrated at 11am.
