Richard H. Olsen, a humble and devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully at his home in East Wakefield, New Hampshire, on Thursday, July 10, 2025, surrounded by his family he cherished. He was 83.
Born in Winchester on January 13, 1942, Richard was one of three children of the late Axel D. Olsen and Mary C. (Byam) Olsen. He was raised in Melrose and graduated from Essex County Agricultural High School in 1961. From a young age, Richard embodied the values that would define his life-hard work, quiet strength, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Richard served the City of Melrose with honor and humility as a Firefighter for over 40 years. He was proud of serving his community, never seeking recognition, but always stepping up when needed. Known as "Ole" he built longtime connections with fellow firefighters and found joy in the loyal camaraderie of the job. He loved being the tillerman on Ladder 1. Through the Fire Department-and a bit of fate-he met his beloved wife, Dianne, the daughter of a fellow firefighter. They built their life together in Melrose, raising three children with love, laughter, and a deep sense of family.
Caring for his family was Richard's purpose in life. In addition to his full-time role at the Fire Department, he worked several other jobs including running his own firewood business, installing fences, working for his father at Scandia Trading Company, and working for over 20 years at Coviello & Sons Paving Company. He was always working, not for praise or accolades, but simply to give his family the best he could. There was no task too small or job too tough if it meant supporting those he loved.
At home, Richard found joy in fixing things around the house, gardening, and lending a hand wherever it was needed. Known affectionately as "Papa," he was the go-to for home projects which were always followed by a large, homecooked meal. Whether cooking for the firehouse, cooking at church or feeding a crowd at home, he believed that a good meal could solve just about anything.
Richard also gave his time generously to his community. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Melrose First Federal Credit Union, served as Secretary for the Melrose Firefighters Relief Association, and held the position of Treasurer of the Point Road Maintenance Association in East Wakefield.
Above all, Richard was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a beloved grandfather. He had a great sense of humor and a gift for conversation-whether over coffee with friends or a casual chat with a stranger. He was the steady presence his family could always count on-strong, selfless, and kind. Richard will be deeply missed, but his quiet example of love, integrity and hard work will carry on in the hearts and minds of his children and grandchildren.
Richard was the beloved husband of Dianne (Hollis) Olsen, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Devoted father of Wendy C. Applegate and her husband Jim of Melrose, Scott R. Olsen and his wife Nancy of Lynnfield, and Amy C. McCarthy and her husband Stephen of Tewksbury. Dear brother of Sally Snell of Summerville, SC and Karen McDowell of Salem, NH. Cherished grandfather of Andrew, Cameron, Sara, Jeffrey and Ann. Also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather during Visiting Hours in honor of Richard's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, July 21 from 3-7pm, and for his Funeral Service at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St, Melrose, on Tuesday, July 22 at 10am. Gifts in memory of Richard can be made to South Effingham-West Parsonsfield Citizens Organization, PO Box 17, Effingham, NH 03882.
