Etna
October 10, 1950 — August 17, 2026
Richard J. Etna, 75, of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026 at Tufts Medical Center.
Born on October 10, 1950, in Malden, one of three children of the late Salvatore and Angelina (Piazza) Etna, he lived a life full of grace, dedication, and love, touched by the essence of family.
Richard grew up in Medford, where he attended Medford High School, actively participating in basketball, football, and baseball-sports that instilled in him a spirit of teamwork and perseverance. His athletic prowess earned him a football scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. Following his studies, Richard devoted over 45 years to Star Market in the grocery industry.
On June 18, 1972, Richard married his beloved high school sweetheart, Marcia Monagle at St. Francis of Assisi in Medford. The couple settled in Melrose, where they built a nurturing home filled with love and laughter, raising a family that became the pride and joy of Richard's life. Known as "Papa," his greatest happiness stemmed from the cherished moments shared with his family.
Richard was a man who found joy in life's little pleasures. Summers spent at York Beach, rounds of golf, the occasional trip to the casino, and a fervent loyalty to Boston sports teams brought him immense happiness. His legacy is one of warmth, kindness, and unconditional love-qualities that will continue to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Richard was the beloved husband of Marcia A. (Monagle) Etna with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. Devoted father of Christopher M. Etna of Melrose and Danielle E. Giddings and her husband Jeff of Marshfield. Proud grandfather of Timmy, Tessa, and Emmy Giddings. Loving brother of Josephine Micciche and her husband Joseph of Nashua, NH and Ralph Etna and his wife Franny of Ipswich as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
