A master storyteller, he entertained the room with his gregarious nature, gift of gab, and perfectly timed one liners.

Mr. Richard D. Brown, a respected Melrose High School teacher, passionate Marine Corps veteran, devoted family man, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma, surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, August 30, 2026. He was 87 years old.

Richard was born in Boston, one of three children of the late Daniel and Anne (McDonald) Brown. A native of Lynn, Richard was raised and educated in Lynn, graduating from St. Mary's High School before attending Newman Prep in Boston and earning his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Salem State College. Upon graduating from Salem State in 1961, Richard and his twin brother, Robert D. Brown, were commissioned together as officers in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a military career that would span more than three decades. Richard served four years of active duty in North Carolina and then stationed at 1st MAW, MCAS, Iwakuni, Japan followed by twenty years in the Reserves, rising through the ranks from Private to Major. During his service, he served as a Commanding Officer and Judge Advocate General of a USMC Law Unit. A passionate military man, Richard's service in the Marine Corps became integral to his life, instilling in him a deep sense of loyalty, duty, and respect for others that he carried throughout every chapter of his life. While serving in the Reserves, he began teaching in the Melrose Public Schools and then attended Law School nights at Suffolk University.

After a chance meeting in Marblehead where Richard quite literally swept Isabelle Kimball off her feet, the two were married on August 26, 1967, in Boston. Richard and Isabelle made their home in Melrose, where they built a life filled with love, laughter, family, and, of course, countless stories while raising their three children, Alison, Jason, and Andrea.

Richard devoted much of his life to education. As a longtime teacher at Melrose High School, he earned the respect of generations of students and colleagues. He also maintained a private law practice in Malden while teaching as an adjunct professor, sharing his knowledge through Continuing Education courses at Tufts University and the French River Education Center for nearly 50 years. Throughout his more than thirty year career as a law and history teacher, Richard never lost his enthusiasm for sharing what he knew, or the stories that came with it. Whether in a classroom or conversation, he had a natural ability to command attention, connect easily with people, and leave a lasting impression.

True to the Marine Corps motto, "Semper Fidelis," meaning always faithful, Richard remained steadfastly loyal to the Corps throughout his life. His military service remained a source of true pride, and he held an especially deep respect for his fellow service members and the unique bonds formed through military service. Richard was a longtime and devoted member of the Wardroom Club in Boston, Semper Fidelis Society, Naval War College Foundation, and Marine Corps Association. He fondly reminisced about his years in the Marines and shared those experiences with enthusiasm, entertaining countless audiences with stories from his service. He was proud not only of his own service, but of the men and women with whom he served and the lifelong camaraderie and respect that came from their shared commitment.

Affectionately known as “Lefty Brown,” Richard was a longtime member and avid golfer at Wenham Country Club, where he enjoyed countless rounds and laughter with fellow members. He was also a devoted Boston sports fan, loved coaching his son in Melrose Babe Ruth baseball, and took great pride in attending as many as possible of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events over the years. 

After establishing deep roots in Melrose, Richard and Isabelle eventually felt the call of the North Shore and made their home in Annisquam in Gloucester. Days at the beach with family, riding the ocean waves, and afternoons in the pool with his grandchildren became a treasured part of their life. He took daily walks with his beloved dogs and never stopped sharing his love, stories, and jokes with those closest to him.

Truly one of a kind, Richard had a way of making an impression wherever he went. A master storyteller, he entertained the room with his gregarious nature, gift of gab, and perfectly timed one liners. His natural charisma, combined with a bit of sarcasm, made him wonderful company to those fortunate enough to know him. Whether recounting a Marine Corps experience, a moment from the classroom, or simply telling a story around the dinner table, Richard had a gift for making his audience feel as though they were right there, laughing along with him. He was well respected by his students and colleagues, admired by his fellow Marines and military members, and cherished by his family and friends.

Most recently, Richard was lovingly cared for at the John Bertram House of Swampscott, where the compassionate staff treated him with great kindness, dignity, and respect. His family will always be grateful for the warmth and loving care they provided.

Richard will be deeply and sorely missed, but his stories, laughter, loyalty, and wisdom will continue to live on in the lives of those he loved. May he rest in peace.

Richard was the beloved husband Isabelle (Kimball) Brown with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Devoted father of Alison McDonough and husband Tim of Marblehead, Jason Brown of Swampscott and Cathy Brown, daughter in law of Reading, and Andrea Pagliuca and husband Steve of N. Reading. Dear twin brother Robert D. Brown and his wife Judy of Groveland, and brother of the late Patricia Donahue and her late husband Robert. Cherished grandfather of Kiley, Morgan, Ashley, and Stevie. Caring uncle of Chris, David, and Neil Donahue, and Heather Borci, and loving cousin of Gerard Collins of Winthrop. Also survived by many extended family members, friends and colleagues.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor and remembrance of Richard during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 3-7pm, and again on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 9:30am before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:30am. Interment in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
