Raymond A. Gerke

Raymond A. Gerke, of Peabody and formerly of Reading, passed away in Reading, MA after a brief illness on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at age 81.

Born on August 21, 1944 in Amityville, NY, Ray was one of two children of the late Oscar and Clara (Ruhland) Gerke. He grew up in Bethpage, NY, and his life was marked by a spirit of service and generosity that touched the lives of many. A proud Army veteran, Ray served his country in Vietnam.

After returning home, he furthered his education, earning a master's degree that would enable him to devote 20 years of his professional life as the Director of the Reference Department at the Concord Free Public Library. His dedication to the community went beyond the library, as he was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Boston for many years, where he served as an elder and usher, embodying the values of kindness and generosity that defined him.

Ray was also an active member of the Top of the Hill Gang, a ski and sports club for seniors. His leadership as President, Vice President, Secretary, Board member, and trip leader showcased his passion for fostering connection and activity among his peers. Known for his friendly demeanor, he developed lasting friendships and always made those around him feel welcomed.

Ray is survived by a loving community of family and friends. Ray was the loving brother of Robert Gerke of Danvers, MA; beloved godfather of Scott R. Peter of Winston-Salem, NC; cherished cousin of Franz Josef Blass of Saarlouis, Germany; and many other first cousins in the United States including Roland Montes De Oca, Michele Prihoda, Ann Spooner, Mark Koester, Johanna Koester, and Julia Ring.
