Ralph Watson

Ralph L. Watson, Jr., dedicated educator, compassionate community leader, and talented craftsman, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Concord Hospital in New Hampshire. He was 67.

Ralph was born in Cambridge on February 23, 1958, one of six children of the late Ralph L. Watson and June (Dugan) Watson. Raised in Melrose, he graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1977 and during his school years was a very active member First Baptist Church in Melrose. Ralph pursued higher education with passion, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a Master of Education, Special Education and Teaching degree from UMass Boston.

Ralph began a fulfilling career as an educator that spanned over 3 decades, numerous school communities throughout the Boston area, and positively impacted the lives of thousands of students and staff members. With a specialty in respect, kindness for all, and unwavering support for students and staff alike, Ralph was a guiding light as an Art Teacher and Middle School Principal. From Sharon, Concord, Watertown, Medford, Swampscott and finally Cambridge, public schools were made better by Ralph's ability to partner with teachers to create the best learning environment for students. Always in the classroom with an eye for who needed a little extra support, Ralph brought out the best in teachers and students alike.

A lifelong learner and artist at heart, Ralph immersed himself in a wide array of creative pursuits-jewelry making, pottery, photography, Japanese shibori dyeing, cooking, weaving, gardening, and everything in between. Ralph succeeded in one artistic project only to discover a new love to master, many times over. He shared his talents generously by cooking for Lasagna Love, feeding those in need and volunteering in soup kitchens in Boston and New Hampshire.

Always a man of action, Ralph quickly became a leader and organizer for outreach projects giving back to those in need as an active member of the Old South Church in Copley Square. Ralph lent his do-it-all mindset and skilled hands to projects big and small, and built connections that became friendships. He loved living in Boston, experiencing the variety of culture, and being an active community builder through care and compassion.

In retirement, Ralph's talents as an artist and skills as a leader were on display as the Manager of the Sandwich Home Industries, League of NH Craftsmen in Center Sandwich, NH. He continued sharing his love for teaching others and offering help for those needing it. After moving to Moultonborough, Ralph and Peter curated beautiful perennial and vegetable gardens. Ralph also loved reading, traveling extensively, and sharing his next big project with those he loved.

Ralph leaves a legacy of the pursuit of knowledge put into action, always rewarding himself through the gift of helping others. He will be deeply and sorely missed, but may his life serve as an inspiration for all.

Ralph was the beloved husband of Peter Olsen with whom he shared 40 wonderful years. Loving brother of Paul Watson of Andover, Janet Riordan and her husband Dennis of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Diane Roth and her late husband Robert of Port Charlotte, FL, Donna Watson Ridley of St. Petersburg, FL, and the late Stephen Watson. Caring brother-in-law of Jean Galvin of Melrose, Carol McKinley and her husband Kevin of Moultonborough, NH, Sharon Mallon and her husband Tom of Stratham, NH and the late Richard Olsen and his surviving wife Vicki of VA. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
