Ralph S. Archibald, formerly of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022.He was 97.
Born in Malden on May 6, 1924, Ralph was one of three children of the late Henry C. and Helen (Strong) Archibald.Ralph grew up in Dover, New Hampshire and graduated from Dover High School where he enjoyed playing the trombone in the High School Band.
Ralph enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served as a Gunnery Officer on the USS Oregon City during WWII.He was honorably discharged in 1946, attaining the rank of Ensign.
Ralph graduated from Tufts college and the US Navy V-12 program with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.He completed two master's degrees in engineering at Harvard.
He worked as a Civil and Sanitary engineer focusing on municipal water and sewer projects.He also taught mathematics at Northeastern University for several years up into his 70's.
Ralph was married to the love of his life, Shirley Clark, and they shared more than 50 wonderful years together.They settled in Melrose to raise their family.
He was a longtime and active member of Melrose Highlands Congregational Church. He played the trombone in various local marching bands, played percussion with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, raced sailboats in Rockport, MA, and enjoyed reading.
Ralph's thoughtfulness, big heart, and calm demeanor will be missed by all.
Ralph was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (Clark) Archibald.devoted father of David W. (Marilyn) Archibald of W. Newbury. Dear brother of Eleanor (the late Robert) Scribner of Kennebunk, ME, and the late Paul (Faith) Archibald. Proud grandfather of Cameron, Hunter, and Tessa Archibald.
Relatives & friends are invited to a visiting hour at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, Feb. 3 from 9-10am and for his Funeral Service celebrated at 10am.Masks are required. Interment with Military Honors at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
