Michael T. Galvin, a cherished father, beloved friend, and active member of the community, passed away on December 2, 2023, in Concord, NH, at the age of 78. He was born in Medford on August 6, 1945, one of four children of the late Michael and Mary (McAveeney) Galvin and spent his formative years in Somerville, before moving to Melrose in October of 1973.
Mike graduated from Somerville Trade High School with Honors and graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Bunker Hill College.
Mike served during the Vietnam War in the United States Army, being honorably discharged in 1968 as an American Veteran.
Mike led a fruitful career, starting out working for Boston Maine Railroad as an electrician, he continued to work for MBCR and Amtrak retiring as Trainmaster. Michael was a member of IBEW Local 103 for more than 20 years. In addition to his railroad career, he was a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating Galvin Electric for over two decades with his son Michael as an apprentice by his side. His commitment to his craft was evident through his involvement in community events such as a member of Melrose Veterans Advisory Board and volunteering with his sons for Home for the Holidays and the Victorian Fair, where his skills as an electrician shined.
Remembered for his genuine warmth and gentle spirit, Michael was known for his honesty, humor, and always being there to lend a helping hand. He was a true gentleman, opening doors and brightening days with his pleasant nature. Despite his busy schedule, he prioritized spending quality time with his family, creating treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
In his leisure time, Michael found joy in traveling. He particularly enjoyed visits to Florida and Ireland, immersing himself in different cultures and creating lasting connections.
He pursued hobbies such as gardening, woodworking photography, and model trains, finding solace and satisfaction in these creative pursuits. A devoted Boston sports fan, he proudly cheered on his teams during both triumphs and challenges.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a genuine zest for life. His vibrant spirit and everlasting kindness will forever echo in our hearts.
Mike was the beloved husband of the late Paulette (Keaveny) Galvin with whom he shared 47 years of marriage up until her passing in 2015. Devoted father of Michael T. Galvin, Jr. and his wife Emily Earp-Galvin of Franklin, NH, Stephen Galvin and his wife Erin of Lynn, and Danielle Leary (his princess) and her husband Steven of W. Boylston.
