Merle C. (Engelhardt) Erban, 82, of Melrose, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Born on January 14, 1944, in Boston, Merle was one of three daughters of the late Charles and Marion (Tucker) Engelhardt. She grew up in Bedford on her family's farm, where she developed a strong work ethic and independence that would guide her throughout her life. After graduating from Bedford High School, she earned an associate's degree from Green Mountain College.
Merle raised her family in Melrose, filling her children's lives with love, laughter, warmth, and unwavering support. Known for her kind nature and energetic spirit, she was not only a devoted mother but also a cherished grandmother.
Merle developed a love of music and dancing at an early age, often hurrying home to watch American Bandstand and learn the latest dances and songs-a joy that always stayed with her throughout her life.
Tennis became one of Merle's greatest passions. She competed in clubs and leagues for many years, winning numerous Melrose city tennis championships as well as championships at Bellevue Golf Club. Her love of the game eventually took her to London, where she enjoyed attending The Wimbledon Championships.
Her independence and creativity were always evident at home. An avid gardener and enthusiastic renovator, she loved transforming her home and yard. She was also talented at sewing and crafts, always creating something new with her hands.
She took pride in her heritage and was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution through her Tucker family lineage, following in her mother's footsteps.
For more than a decade, Merle was rarely seen without her beloved Cairn Terrier, Rusty, her faithful companion on daily walks around the neighborhood.
In her later years, Merle faced Alzheimer's disease with strength and quiet grace. Even as memories faded, her joyful spirit remained unmistakable. She continued to smile, dance, and light up at the sound of music, bringing happiness to her family and to the caregivers who surrounded her.
She will be remembered for her love of family and the warmth, joy, and laughter she brought to all those around her.
Merle was the beloved mother of Melissa (husband Adam) Parr of Melrose and Joseph (wife JoAnn) Erban of Hawaii. She was the cherished grandmother of Lauren and Owen Parr and Jacqueline, Jacob, and Jessica Erban. She was the loving sister of Beverly (late husband Peter) Pritchard and Gretchen (husband Bill) Callaway. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her former husband, Charles E. Erban.
Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of Merle's life during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose, on Wednesday, March 18 from 9-10:30am and for her funeral service on 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Merle's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 320 Nevada St., #201, Newton, MA. 02460 or at www.alz.org.
