Mary Dorothy Fandel (Hanley) of Melrose, MA passed away on May 25, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.Mary was born on August 15, 1930.She was the cherished daughter of Anastasia and John Hanley of West Medford, MA.Mary was the beloved wife of John B. "Jack" Fandel for 59 years.Together they raised a beautiful and loving family.She was the mother of five children, John W. Fandel and his wife Maggi of Charlotte, NC and their three children, Christy, Nathan and Stephen.Ann M. Fandel of Wakefield, MA,Michael T. Fandelof Mansfield, MA and his two children, Catherine and Emily, Mary P. Fandel of Woburn, MA and Edward J. Fandel and his wife Lisa of Tampa, FL and their son Zachary. In addition, Mary was the sister of Eleanor Cronin of Malden, MA, Anne Cerasuolo of Garden City, NY and the late John "Jack" Hanley.
Mary was a graduate of Lawrence Memorial School of Nursing where she worked for many years.She also worked in the office of Dr. Crehan's family practice on Governor's Avenue in West Medford, MA.After her marriage to Jack, she left the workforce to raise her family.When her youngest son was preparing to enter first grade, Mary returned to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and worked on the Medical Surgical unit. After leaving Lawrence Memorial Hospital, she worked as the School Nurse for Melrose High School where she was loved by all and fondly remembered by many high school students.
When Mary and Jack retired, they enjoyed traveling -- visiting Germany, Ireland, Scotland and Switzerland. However, their love for New England was always present, and they both enjoyed vacations on the coast of Cape Elizabeth and Camden, Maine.However, their favorite times were spent with their family and grandchildren in Chatham, MA.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Mary's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, May 30 from 4-8pm, and again on Tuesday at 9:30am before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose for her Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:30am. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
