Margery Carter

Mrs. Margery Carter, a resident of Melrose for 40 years, died Sunday afternoon October 15, 2006 at her home in Melrose. She was 85 years old.

She was born December 22, 1920 in Melrose, MA daughter to the late C. Bertram Crawford and Oleva (Dority) Crawford.

Margery was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School. She began her long and varied career in the arts in New York City as a fashion designer after she graduated from Traphagen School of Design. While a student at Traphagen, she was recruited by Harry Conover of John Powers Modeling Agency to work as a fashion model and appeared on at least two covers of Cosmopolitan Magazine. Her career as a fashion designer was cut short by the advent of World War II, when the fabrics that were imported to be used in the creation of the evening gowns she designed were no longer available. She retired from design to raise a family in the suburbs of New York City.Later she returned to school to study interior design and architecture at F.I.T. and at Yale University, where she took classes with the famed Bauhaus artist, Josef Albers. After graduating, she worked as an architectural interior designer for many years for:B. Altman's, Cabot House, Jordan Marsh, and at Savoir Faire- her own design studio/shop in Bedford Village, NY.She always said that she got the most practical knowledge from her grandfather who she was close to and who owned properties in Melrose and was always "fixing them up".

Her history of volunteer work is extensive. She was often referred to as a pillar of the community of Bedford Village, where she served among other things as deacon at the Bedford Village Presbyterian Church and president of the Fox Lane High School Parents Association. She was known for planning very original fund-raising events, including raffling off two London phone booths at a Fox Lane crafts fair, and awarding blue ribbons to every entry at a garden club event.More recently she was a member of the Melrose Garden Club, the Republican Club, Kappa and the Silver Stringers.

Margery was the former wife of the late Donald L. Carter, Sr. mother of Donald L. "Mac" Carter, Jr. and his partner Anne Farrington of New Gloucester, ME, Dustin P. Carter and his wife Diane of Brookline, Nancy L. Sarno and her husband Anthony of Norwalk, CT, and Timothy T.
