Obituary

Kenneth H. Durland Jr., 89, of Stoneham, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Born on March 12, 1937, in Saugus, Ken was one of three children of the late Kenneth H. and Ruth Durland, Sr. Ken grew up in Lynn, where he embraced life with curiosity and a zest for learning. He graduated from Lynn Classical High School and later joined a General Electric apprenticeship program, where he began a lifelong career that he held dear. Kenneth dedicated his professional life to military manufacturing, retiring as a respected inspector. His work took him around the globe, allowing him to forge many connections and experience other cultures.

In addition to his career, Ken proudly served in the Air Force Reserves, reflecting his commitment to his country and community. He was known for his warm spirit, a genuine friendliness that left an imprint on everyone he met. Family was at the core of Ken's life; he reveled in the moments spent with loved ones.

An avid golfer, Ken found joy in every swing, and his passion for travel led him to explore New England's beautiful landscapes. Yearly trips to Cape Cod were a family tradition, and he also looked forward to visits to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Camden, Maine. A licensed private pilot, he had an adventurous spirit that embraced all the wonders life offered.

Ken was a wonderful person who brought light and laughter into the world. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Ken was the beloved husband of Gail R. (Cheney) Durland with whom he shared nearly 50 years of marriage. Devoted father of Keith Belcher and his wife Laura of Raymond, NH. Loving brother to the late Delores Parker and her late husband Harris and the late Ginny Jorgenson and her late husband Art.

A celebration of life at Melrose Highlands Congregational Church will be announced in the coming weeks.
