Karen J.
DeSpirito
December 26, 1949 – June 5, 2026
St. Joseph–St. Lazarus Church
Karen J. DeSpirito, 76, a proud East Boston native who made Melrose her home for more than forty years, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at Winchester Hospital, with her daughter Krista by her side. Throughout her health struggles, Karen faced each challenge with remarkable resilience, determination, and strength.
Born on December 26, 1949, to the late Jennie and Edward DeSpirito, Karen was fiercely independent, strong-willed, and larger than life. Karen was happiest when surrounded by family, friends, laughter, and conversation. She was an exceptional cook and gracious host. She loved opening her home to family and friends—the door was always open for visits. With her infectious laugh, impeccable style, generous spirit, and vibrant personality Karen rarely went unnoticed.
Karen remained deeply proud of her East Boston roots and the lifelong friendships she formed there, especially with her beloved Eastie Girls. Those friendships, which expanded over the years to include the Everett girls spanned decades and afforded endless happy memories. These friendships were a source of great joy that Karen cherished.
Karen was equally proud of her professional accomplishments earning her Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1981. She enjoyed a distinguished career in public service, working at the Massachusetts State House before becoming the longtime Director of Community and Public Affairs for the MBTA.
Above all, Karen's greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, family member, and friend whose love, guidance, and unwavering support touched the lives of those closest to her. Nothing brought her greater happiness than time spent with the people she loved. She shared an especially close bond with her beloved Mattera cousins, nieces, and nephews. She held a special place in her heart for her cousin Nina (Mattera) Clancy, whom she loved like a sister. Some of Karen's happiest memories were made celebrating Christmas Eve at Holland Road, a treasured family tradition she looked forward to every year.
Karen was the loving mother of Krista (Maffei) Carlson and her husband Scott, of Melrose, and the proud and devoted “Na-na” of Kayleigh Carlson. She was the former wife of the late James P. Maffei and the beloved stepmother of Christopher Rose and his wife, Khadine, of London. She was the cherished sister of the late Michael DeSpirito and is survived by Michael's wife, Jackie DeSpirito of Winthrop, and their daughter, Jenna "Ellie" DeSpirito of Winthrop.
She is also survived by her cherished Mattera cousins, nieces, nephews, treasured Eastie and Everett Girls, and many others whose lives were enriched by her loyalty, generosity, laughter, and love.
Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Karen during Visiting Hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Thursday, June 11 from 4-7pm, and again on Friday, June 12 at 9am, before leaving in procession to St. Joseph–St. Lazarus Church, 59 Ashley St., East Boston, for her Funeral Mass celebrated at 11am.
