John J. "Pete" Buttimer, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away suddenly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital with his devoted wife and beloved son at his side on Saturday morning, May 19, 2012, at age 72.
John was born in Cambridge on October 6, 1939, one of three children of the late John and Josephine (Keohane) Buttimer.He was raised in Cambridge and graduated from St. Columbkille High School in Brighton, Class of 1957.
On August 2, 1970, John married his wife and best friend, Linda Hughes, and from that point on was lovingly known by all as, "Pete."They settled in Melrose, where they raised their son, Christopher.Pete worked in delivery for Anheuser-Busch Co. for 35 years out of the Medford distribution center. For many years, they spent vacations in Maine along the coast on Peaks Island and later in Wolfeboro, NH on Lake Wentworth.
His interests varied greatly, from walking 3 miles around Lake Quannapowitt, to rooting for Melrose High School and Boston sports teams.He was a 50-year member of the Cambridge YMCA where he played on the handball team for many years.Pete was a great talker, but also enjoyed sitting, reading, and watching the neighborhood from the front porch.
He and Linda shared 41 years of a devoted and love filled marriage.They always enjoyed the time they spent together, especially on trips to Europe and visiting Ireland to see his extended family.They enjoyed going to many live music performances, including musicals, jazz bands, and attending the Boston Symphony.Generous and with a big heart, he arrived home just recently with flowers in hand.They were each other's best friend and shared so many wonderful memories that will be forever remembered and cherished.
Pete was the devoted and cherished husband of Linda D. (Hughes) Buttimer with whom he shared 41 years of marriage.Loving father of Christopher J. Buttimer of Somerville.Beloved brother of Marie Hirvimaki and her husband David of Kingston, and Josephine Keating and her late husband James of Melrose.Dear brother-in-law of Judith Dakin and her husband Bud of Addison, ME, William Hughes and his wife Lorrie of Wakefield, NH, and Robyn Gargan and her husband Bob of Satellite Beach, FL. Pete is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather to honor and remember Pete's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, May 23 from 4-8 PM, and again on Thursday morning at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to the Church of the Incarnation, 429 Upham St., Melrose where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.
