John P. "Jack" Aylward

Mr. John P. Jack' Aylward, a resident of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.He was 79 years old.

John P. Aylward was born in Boston on May 29, 1931, one of nine children of the late Walter A. Aylward and Anna (Brophy) Aylward.John or Jack' as he was well known was raised in Milton, graduated from Milton High School Class of 1949, served in the National Guard from 1947 until 1950, and entered the United States Air Force in 1950.After serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he was honorably discharged in 1971 after 21 years with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

Following his career in the Air Force, Jack began an 18-year career in banking. He retired in 1989 from Key Bank of Portland, Maine as Assistant Vice President.

Mr. Aylward was a voracious reader, an avid and faithful fan of all Boston sports, and loved attending and supporting his grandchildren on their local sports teams.He always looked forward to the weekly Thursday night dinners with his longtime friends and was an honorary member of the Sons of Italy in Quincy where he enjoyed the weekly card games.He will also be lovingly remembered for his knowledge of all current events and affairs.

Jack was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Joyce) Aylward with whom he shared 33 years of marriage.Devoted father of JoAnne A. Pierce and her husband Chris L. Pierce of Melrose and J. Colleen Ingalls and her husband Tom A. Ingalls of Melrose.Dear brother of the late Colonel F. Thomas Aylward, Walter A. Aylward II, James R. Aylward, L. Michael Aylward, Alfred J. Aylward, Marie A. Aylward, Nancy A. Bergen and Jane Hersee.Cherished grandfather of Liam H. Pierce, Olivia L. Pierce, Aidan T. Ingalls, and Teagan E. Ingalls.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, November 16 at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in Jack's honor in the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours Monday from 4-8 PM.Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Maine on Wednesday, November 17 at 11 AM.Gifts in Jack's memory may be made to the Catherine McAuley High School Scholarship Fund, 631 Stevens Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
