Jill M.
Carey
August 7, 1959 — October 23, 2026
Melrose, MA
Jill M. (Baylis) Carey, a resident of Jensen Beach, Florida, and Melrose, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the age of 67.
Born on August 7, 1959, Jill was one of two children of the late George and Jean (Hills) Baylis. She was raised in Wenham and graduated from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in 1977, before
continuing her education at Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. She began her professional career in the Boston area, where she met Michael J. Carey, the man who would become her husband. They made their home in Bedford before eventually moving to upstate New York, where Jill embraced an active outdoor lifestyle. She enjoyed racquetball, golf, tennis, and the many pleasures of being outdoors.
Jill possessed a particularly tender heart for animals and a deep respect for all living creatures. From the black Labrador retrievers of her childhood to her beloved Yorkie Sam, most recently, her Westie Zeke, animals held a special place in her life. Her compassion extended to all living things and reflected the deep kindness in her heart.
Friendship was another enduring source of joy for Jill. She remained devoted to her oldest friends, Jane and Sandy, whom she had met decades earlier while working at a local five-and-dime store.
In later years, Jill and Michael spent much of their time in Jensen Beach, Florida, where she continued to live life to the fullest. Naturally athletic and a strong competitor, she quickly mastered pickleball and in a few short seasons became the community champion. She delighted in walking the beach in search of sea glass and finishing the day with a game of mahjong with friends or working on her latest puzzle. She also enjoyed the hands-on hard work of rehabbing houses with sweat equity in Florida. For several years, Jill gave of herself as a volunteer operator at a suicide prevention hotline assisting those most vulnerable.
When Jill and Michael returned to Massachusetts in 2017, she welcomed the opportunity to spend more time with those dearest to her. Family was at the heart of Jill's life, and she brought boundless energy, enthusiasm, and affection to her role as a grandmother. She delighted in time spent with her grandchildren, whether joining them in a backyard game, cheering them on at sporting events, or happily chasing them around the house.
Jill will be deeply missed, but her generous spirit, her selflessness, and her endless kindness for all will carry on in the hearts and minds of her family.
Jill was the beloved wife of Michael J. Carey with whom she shared 30 years of marriage. Devoted stepmother of Michael R. Carey and his wife Emily Hinchey of Boxford, and Suzanne Kaplan and her husband Mike of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Bryce, Jack, Abigail, William, Andrew, and James. Dear sister of Glenn Baylis and his wife Lisa of Bedford, and loving aunt of Heather Pask of Ripton, VT and Craig Baylis of Beverly.
