Janet E. McKenney, a resident of Topsfield, formerly of Saugus, passed away at home on Monday, September 15, 2025, at age 80.
Janet was born in Chelsea on December 7, 1944, one of three children of the late Walter Pearson and Eleanor (Gill) Pearson. She was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, and married Gordon S. McKenney Jr. in 1964. They settled in Saugus to raise a family of four children. While balancing family life, Janet also worked shipping logistics for DHL in Woburn and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Family was at the heart of Janet's life. Whether she was knitting sweaters for her children, cheering from the sidelines at her grandchildren's sporting events, or hosting family gatherings, she gave of herself wholeheartedly. She delighted in being present for every milestone, and her devotion impacted countless moments both large and small.
In her free time, Janet was an avid quilter, knitter, baker and reader. She created numerous beautiful quilts, many with a special message for loved ones, and was known for her baked goods and famous potato salad. She was a regular at the Saugus Library for many years, and looked forward to trips with family to Mohegun Sun. An animal lover, Janet held special bonds with her German Shepherds over the years, all of whom remained close to her heart.
From childhood, Janet found peace and joy along the Maine coast, gathering with family at her parents' home in Cape Elizabeth. She continued that tradition with her own children, passing along her love for the ocean, lobster dinners, and creating many summer memories that remain treasured for generations.
With a love for a sarcastic one liner, Janet always kept everyone guessing with her spontaneous sense of humor. Above all, she will be remembered for her unwavering love of family, her loyal and generous heart, and the laughter she brought to those blessed to know her.
Janet was the beloved wife of the late Gordon S. McKenney, Jr. with whom she shared 55 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Scott McKenney and his fiancé Mckayla Berry of Hamilton, Dawn L. Pelletier and her husband Kevin of Topsfield, Diane L. McKenney and Al Carrier of Charlestown, and Tara L. Ordway and her husband Fred of Methuen. Cherished grandmother of Katy and Kevin Pelletier, Cole McKenney, and Emersyn McKenney. Dear sister of the late Richard and Allan Pearson. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in honor of Janet during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, Sept. 19 from 4-8pm, and on Saturday, Sept. 20 for her Funeral Service at 10am. Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Donations in memory of Janet’s love of animals may be made to the MSPCA www.mspca.org.
