Fred R. Richards, Sr.

Fred R. Richards, Sr., of Melrose, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 86.

Born on June 7, 1939 in Boston, Fred was one of three children of the late Fred A. and Grace Hope (Vitagliano) Richards. He spent his formative years in East Boston, where he graduated from Boston English School. He furthered his education at Burdett Business College, earning an associate degree that laid the foundation for a successful career in sales within the cosmetic industry.

Fred married his beloved wife, Carol A. Diodati, on June 24, 1967, and together they settled in Melrose, where they lovingly raised their family. As a devoted member of the community, Fred was actively involved at Incarnation Church and later at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, where he shared his faith and passion for teaching by instructing in the CCD program. He also cherished his time as an umpire with the Incarnation Little League, demonstrating his commitment to youth sports and community engagement.

Fred's public service extended beyond the church, as he served as a Melrose Alderman and Board president, always working to better the lives of those around him. Known for his infectious spirit, Fred was a joyous presence, filling rooms with laughter and music. He loved to play the piano, sing Christmas songs, and dance—a true embodiment of joy and warmth. His love for life was evident in his passion for the Boston Red Sox and his memorable appearance on American Bandstand.

Fred was deeply devoted to his family, never missing a game or event in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He cherished summers in South Yarmouth and looked forward to yearly trips to Florida, though he couldn’t stay long as he longed to be back with his children and grandchildren.

In reflecting on Fred's life, we remember a man who brought joy to countless others, a loving husband, father, and a true friend. His legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.

Fred was the beloved husband of Carol A. (Diodati) Richards with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Devoted father of Fred R. Richards, Jr., and his wife Christine of Melrose and Derek J. Richards and his wife Joy of Georgetown. Dear brother of the late Leonard Richards and his late wife Marina, and the late Marilyn Richards. Cherished grandfather of Morgan, Alexander, Nicholas, and Michael Richards. Loving uncle of the late Robin Richards Imperato.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in honor of Fred during Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Thursday, August 28 from 4-7 p.m., and again on Friday, August 29 at 8:45 a.m. before leaving in procession to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1055 Main St., Wakefield for his Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:00am.
