Mr. Erle H. Down, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a period of declining health.He was 96 years old.
Mr. Down was born in Saskatoon, Canada, on December 4, 1913, one of five children of the late James F. Down and Katherine (Gibson) Down.
Erle graduated from Deering High School in Portland, Maine.He lived in Melrose where he worked as a residential carpenter for many years.He also worked for Volpe Construction for several years.Erle was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.He was an avid golfer and 59-year member of the Saugus bowling league.
Erle was the beloved husband of Ina (Ekstrom) Down with whom he shared 73 years of marriage.Devoted father of Erle G. Down of Wellington, NV, Stephen P. Down and his wife Betsy of Gloucester, Elizabeth A. Gondek and her husband David of Auburn, ME, and the late Kenneth G. Down.Dear brother of the late James Down, Edward Down, Frances Holland, and Kay Phinney.Cherished grandfather Sean Down, Paulette Dolgin, Siri Khalsa, Sat Hari Khalsa, Steven Budrow, Alex Budrow, Sarah Gardner, Laura Gardner, Jennifer Gondek, and Stephanie Gondek.Loving uncle of Gerald Peterson of W. Newbury, Lloyd Peterson of Dunbarton, NH, and many other nieces and nephews.He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service at the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, April 6 at 11:30 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday from 4-8 PM.
