Mrs. Edith (Johnson) Faulkner, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at EPOCH Senior Healthcare of Melrose, in her 99th year.
Born on January 9, 1912 in Brockton, she was one of five children of the late John A. Johnson and Hilma (Lindh) Johnson.
Mrs. Faulkner was raised and educated in Brockton and settled in Melrose with her late husband Ken to raise their three children.Along with her husband, they opened Faulkner's Cleansing on Franklin Street in Melrose and operated the business for many years.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Anns of Melrose Rotary Club, Kappa Delta Psi, Hospital Auxiliary and past president of the Optimus Club.She was also a 10 year member of Chapter #20 Service Corps of Retired Executives, Boston.
For many years, Edith along with her late husband Ken were responsible for the "settling in" of all the Rotary Foundation Fellows studying in Boston.She hosted them during holidays, later visiting them in their home countries and maintained contact with many of them for the rest of her life.
Above all else, she cherished the time she spent with family at Piney Knoll Cottage on Bear Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.
Edith was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth I. Faulkner.Devoted mother of Jean F. Dougan and her husband Clint of New Hampton, NH, Janet F. Chapman and her husband Harry of Sausalito, CA, and William K. Faulkner of Marblehead.Dear sister of Alice I. Johnson of Melrose and the late Dagmar E. Bowles, Ethel L. Rufener and Howard A. Johnson.Cherished grandmother of Thomas K. Dougan of Haverhill, Katherine D. Cort of Mount Lebanon, PA, Harrison Chapman of Japan and Coleman Chapman of Sausalito, CA.Loving great grandmother of Jack Dougan, Sam Dougan, Josie Cort, and Andy Cort.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
