Donald E. “Don” Bremberg, a lifelong resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78.
Born in Everett on September 12, 1947, Don was one of two sons of the late Lars Harry and Hilda D. (Erikson) Bremberg. Raised in Melrose, he attended Ripley Elementary School, where he first met his future wife, Charlene Steeves. From that early friendship grew a lifelong love and partnership that spanned nearly 59 years with a marriage built on laughter, loyalty, and quiet devotion. Together, they created a family whose strong bonds reflect the foundation they built.
A man of steady work ethic and scientific mind, Don spent nearly three decades as a Facilities Engineer with Polaroid, where his precision, patience, and technical skill earned the respect of fellow colleagues. Later, he continued his career as a facilities consultant, traveling the world for various engineering companies. Don took pride in his work, not for recognition, but for the satisfaction of doing things right.
A longtime and active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Melrose, Don served humbly on the Vestry, and as both Warden and Greeter.
Outside of work and church, Don’s passions reflected his thirst for knowledge and craftsmanship. He was an avid photographer, woodworker, and experienced in all trades. With an engineer’s mind and a heart for helping others, Don was the one everyone called with something to fix. “Just call Pops,” as the family would say, and he would always show up, tools in hand and a smile on his face.
Don and Charlene shared a love of travel, exploring New England, taking memorable trips to the Bahamas and Bermuda, and visiting US National Parks. But his favorite moments were the simple ones together with family for birthdays, holidays and get-togethers.
Hardworking, and genuine, Don embodied quiet strength and loyal kindness. His steady presence and gentle wisdom will remain a lasting example for his family and all who were fortunate enough to call him “Pops.”
Don was the beloved husband of Charlene M. (Steeves) Bremberg with whom he shared nearly 59 years of marriage. Devoted father of Kristin Bremberg of Stoneham, Kim Barbagallo and her husband Chris of Tewksbury, Eric Bremberg and his wife Jennifer of Saugus, Katie Shannon and her husband Colm of Melrose, Joshua Bremberg and his wife Debbie of Litchfield, NH, and Ryan Bremberg and his wife Ashley of Melrose. Dear brother of Robert Bremberg. Pops to Sam, Jessica, Justin, Amelia, Emmie, Chloe, and Kelsi. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, and 2 grand-pups, Ned and Bran.
Family and friends are kindly invited to gather during Visiting Hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St, Melrose, on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 3-7pm and for his Funeral Service at Trinity Church, 131 W.
