Charlotte Ann Swan, born January 8, 1935 in Winchester, Massachusetts, died peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 91. A lifelong resident of Melrose, Massachusetts, Charlotte devoted her life to caring for others-with gentleness, generosity, and a steadfast commitment to helping others that defined her character.

Charlotte was the daughter of Theodore "Uncle Duck" P. Swan and Emma A. Swan, and the beloved sister of Barbara L. Swan, who predeceased her many years ago. Raised in a family deeply rooted in Maine as well as Massachusetts, Charlotte's lived the values learned as a child throughout her life: humility, kindness, and a profound love of the natural world.

She graduated from the University of Maine and went on to earn her R.N. degree from the Cornell School of Nursing. Charlotte spent many dedicated years as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, where her compassion, skill, quiet strength, and sweet nature touched many patients, families, and colleagues. Caring for others was not simply her profession-it was her vocation, lived out daily with kindness and devotion.

Charlotte's heart belonged to Southport Island, Maine, where, for many years, she spent her summers in a cherished cottage designed and built by her Uncle Earl of East Machias. It was her sanctuary: a place of salt air, balsam, pine and spruce trees, and the natural beauty she treasured. Long before environmentalism had a name, Charlotte lived its principles-celebrating nature, honoring the land, and inspiring family and friends to appreciate the world around them.

She was an active member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, where her kindness and generosity were felt by all who knew her. Charlotte cared for her parents and sister throughout their lives, embodying devotion both quiet and selfless.

Charlotte is survived by her dear first cousin, Sara P. Fogler of Exeter, Maine, who also had a cottage on Southport. Charlotte took joy in spending time with Sara and visiting Sara's children and grandchildren. Charlotte is also survived by cousins whose lives she brightened during summer visits to her mother's birthplace of East Machias, Maine. She also leaves behind neighbors, friends, and caregivers who enriched her later years, and whose lives she enriched.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to her neighbor and longtime friends, Marcia and Mary Ann, whose support allowed Charlotte to remain in her home for as long as possible. Other special friends included neighbors Jane and Bob and family, and Jeannette from nursing school. Deep gratitude is offered to The Fitch, Senior Living on Ell Pond-especially Maria-for the warmth and care they provided during Charlotte's lovely years there. Finally, the family wants to thank Greenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Melrose and Brighton Hospice for the exceptional care they provided in her final months. Memorial contributions may be directed to these three organizations or any environmental organization.

Charlotte's life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and the quiet strength of a woman devoted to caring for others. May her memory be a blessing.
