Mr. Charles M. Dow, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Overlook Masonic Health Center in Charlton. He was 91 years old.
Charles Dow was born in Melrose on August 23, 1919, a son of the late Frank E. Dow and Bertha S. (Marshall) Dow.
Charles or "Charlie" as he was well known, was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1937.After proudly serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, he graduated from Bentley University in 1947. Charlie had a long career as an accountant for several companies.For the last 18 years, Charlie worked for WGBH, Channel 2, and it is from there he retired.
Charlie was an active member of the community.He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Fidelity Lodge AF&AM, Hugh de Payens Commandery, Waverly Royal Arch Chapter, Aleppo Temple Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Boston, the Melrose Historical Society, Greater Lynn Camera Club, Photographic Society of America, AARP and the African Violet Club in Wakefield where he served as a judge.He also served as a reserve firefighter for the City of Melrose.
Mr. Dow enjoyed gardening, raising African Violets, travel, photography, classical music, and designing and making latch hook rugs.
Mr. Dow was the beloved husband of the late Connie A. (Jenness) Dow with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.Devoted son of the late Frank E. and Bertha Dow and stepson of the late Nancy A. Dow.Dear brother of George E. Dow, Sr. of Middleton and the late Harold F. Dow.Dear uncle of Robert Dow of Plymouth, ME, Daneell Bourque of Middleton, George E. Dow Jr. of Georgetown, Kathleen Ross of Wakefield, Robert Jenness of Lynn and the late Sandra Neiman.Also survived by several grand nieces and grand nephews and longtime family friend, Polly Jordan of S. Weymouth.
Funeral Service at the First Congregational Church, 121 W.
