Anthony J. "Tony" D'Arcangelo, 76
of Melrose, formerly of the North End, died Monday August 2, 2004 at the Elmhurst Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. D'Arcangelo was born in the North End of BostonOctober 2, 1927, son of the late Joseph D'Arcangelo and Carmella (Scozzari) D'Arcangelo. Tony was raised as a product of the great depression and that fact shaped the manner in which he led his life.Rarely if ever did he miss a day of work and when he got home, it was often off to some type of public meeting. Tony was a graduate of Boston English School and Burdette College.He was also a graduate of both the Farren and the Donoghue School of Civil Service.
Tony served in the United States Navy during WWII with Top Secret security clearance and held the Rank of Seaman First Class. Mr. D'Arcangelo was a Retired 1st Assistant clerk of the Appellate Tax Board for the Commonwealth of MA and was a former Alderman for the City of Melrose.Tony spent many years working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.He worked in the Governor's Office as an aide to the Personnel Director, the Mass. Dept. of Health and Welfare as an Assistant Chief Investigator and the City of Boston as Deputy Tax Collector.He also worked as Commissioner for the Disabled Persons Protection Commission, the Metropolitan Bank & Trust in Melrose as Marketing Director and the Mass. Dept. of Health and Welfare as Assistant Chief Investigator. From 1981-87 he worked as a self-employed Financial Consultant.Most recently he spent several years working for the MDC at Breakheart Reservation.During the late 70s, Tony coached little league baseball for four years and performed basket collections during mass for St. Mary's Church in Melrose. Tony was a Silver Haired Legislator, a member of the Republican State Committee, the MBTA Advisory Board, Melrose Registrar of Voters, Melrose Knights of Columbus, Melrose Sons of Italy, Municipal Clerks' Assoc. and Amvets Post #21. Tony was known for his classic catch phrase "A Great American."He would walk around town and people would call out to him and he would answer "you are a Great American!"A classic politician, Tony was known for building coalitions and for forging consensus.He was likable, pragmatic and moderate and had few, if any, foes. Known by many of his friends as "Tony" he was also known as "Shorty" by his beloved and recently dear departed wife of 54 years, Mary L. (Renda) D'Arcangelo. Father of Stephen V. D'Arcangelo of Melrose, Michael A. D'Arcangelo of Salisbury, Maria D'Arcangelo-Lapides of Encino, CA and David D'Arcangelo of Malden. Brotherof Amy Contrado of FL, Angela Sartorelli of Saugus and the late Peter and Isadore D'Arcangelo.Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St. Melrose Thursday,August 5, 2004 at 8:00 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church (corner of Myrtle and Herbert Street) Melrose at 9:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours Tuesday 6-8 PM and Wednesday 4-8 PM.
